Toronto, ON June, 2026
Sharmina Nasrin officially declared her candidacy for city councillor in Ward 20 (Scarborough Southwest) on June 1st at a press conference. She spoke on the agenda of her campaign, describing her focus as ensuring that every resident felt they had a voice to represent them at City Hall. She stated that her key concerns arose through issues she recognized in her lived experiences and conversations with residents from the community, highlighting several core initiatives such as affordable housing and support for non-profit housing, public safety, transit reliability, opportunities for youth empowerment, and strengthening community services to reflect the diverse identities present within the ward through spaces such as cultural centers.
Earlier that day, Sharmina completed her registration at City Hall to run in the upcoming fall Municipal election. She emphasized that nearly every resident of Scarborough Southwest shares the same central priorities and concerns regardless of their background. “Scarborough Southwest is a community of over 110,000 residents. Finding common ground on issues that affect us the most is simple because the changes we seek as individuals are not so different from those of our neighbours.” During the press conference, Sharmina promised to maintain transparency and open dialogue with all community members throughout her campaign and beyond. “I am a firm believer that change requires engagement from everyone, which is why I invite you to raise your concerns today, tomorrow, and anytime you find discomfort in how things are being managed on your behalf.
It is not only your right as a citizen but your responsibility as a member of this community.” She highlighted that her background as an immigrant, mother, and community leader has shaped her understanding of how to fight for the rights of the citizens of Scarborough Southwest. Sharmina stated that her goal was to rebrand Scarborough Southwest and provide every member of the community with opportunities and resources. “Like many of you in the audience, I decided to call Canada my forever home for these values that have allowed such a diverse community to come together as one, seeking a better life for themselves and their families.” Concluding her remarks, she called all residents to join her in collective action to reimagine the future of Scarborough Southwest. “Big transformations should be envisioned locally.
I look forward to working with you to have one united voice for every Scarborough story. Let’s make it happen.” About Sharmina Nasrin Sharmina Nasrin’s campaign for city councillor of Ward 20 focuses on housing affordability, reliable transit, safer neighbourhoods, community inclusion, economic opportunity, and meaningful engagement with residents.
